On Democracy

About The Forum

The Forum is a citizen-centered space for ideas, conversations, and events focused on strengthening democracy.

The name draws on the ancient Roman forum—a civic gathering place at the center of public life, where political, legal, commercial, and social activity took place.   In that spirit, The Forum creates space for citizens today to think together about democracy’s next chapter.

As America reflects on 250 years of independence, this is a moment to ask a simple but important question:

How can citizens talk, think, and work through public issues in better ways?

The Forum is shaped by citizens, thinkers, educators, writers, and community-minded people who care about strengthening democracy. Our members bring different experiences and perspectives, but share a common interest in better public conversation, clearer civic thinking, and practical models for democratic renewal.

Forum members contribute in many ways. Some develop models. Some write essays. Some lead conversations. Some gather examples of successful civic work. Others help shape events, discussions, and long-term direction. Together, they make The Forum a place where ideas can be tested, refined, and shared.

The Forum is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization. We are not a political campaign or hands-on advocacy group. Our role is to develop, gather, and share ideas, frameworks, and models that can help citizens, educators, organizations, and communities think more clearly about civic life and public problem-solving. The organization has consistently described its work as centered on citizen voice, conversation, and democratic participation.

We focus on three connected areas: Conversations, Ideas, and Events. Through member work, public discussions, essays, practical models, and emerging initiatives,

The Forum offers resources that others can explore, adapt, build on, and use in their own communities.

Our Purpose

The Forum exists to help rebuild the public conversation.

Our mission is to reawaken, invigorate, and expand democracy from the bottom up by awakening the citizen’s role in civic life.

Democracy depends not only on institutions and elections, but also on citizens who are willing to listen, question, learn, disagree constructively, and remain engaged.

Our work continues to evolve, but our purpose is clear: to foster better civic habits, deepen democratic thinking, and share practical models for America’s next chapter.

Join the Conversation

America’s 250th anniversary is a time to look back — and to think seriously about what kind of democracy we want to carry forward. The Forum invites citizens, educators, community leaders, and others interested in civic renewal to explore new essays, emerging models, events, and conversations about how we can talk, think, and participate more constructively in democracy’s next chapter.
