Linking STEM to Communities and Communities to STEM
Overview
The Guy R. Hawkins Center for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (Hawkins STEM) is a community-focused nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting people, communities, and opportunities through STEM. Inspired by the life and vision of biochemist and educator Guy R. Hawkins, the organization is founded on the belief that STEM is not reserved for scientists, engineers, and mathematicians alone, but is a powerful tool for learning, problem-solving, community-building, and civic participation available to everyone. Hawkins STEM seeks to build bridges between STEM and the public by making STEM visible, accessible, understandable, and relevant to everyday life.
Mission
The mission of Hawkins STEM is to democratize STEM by bringing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics directly into neighborhoods, community organizations, faith communities, schools, libraries, senior centers, and other gathering places. Through hands-on projects, public events, media productions, educational programs, and collaborative learning experiences, Hawkins STEM works to increase STEM literacy, encourage lifelong learning, and help people understand how STEM shapes the world around them. The organization believes that communities become stronger when individuals learn together, solve problems together, and build relationships through shared STEM experiences.
What Hawkins STEM Does
To accomplish this mission, Hawkins STEM is developing a network of neighborhood-based STEM teams composed of students, families, adults, retirees, educators, and professionals who work together on real-world projects. The organization also produces STEM media, educational videos, podcasts, public discussions, and documentaries designed to communicate complex ideas in ways that are understandable and engaging to broad audiences. By combining community engagement, systems thinking, STEM education, and storytelling, Hawkins STEM seeks to create a culture in which STEM becomes a normal and valued part of community life.
Vision
Over the coming years, Hawkins STEM plans to establish sustainable community STEM programs throughout the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia region and beyond; create partnerships with schools, universities, nonprofits, government agencies, and industry; develop a permanent STEM learning center; build a digital library of STEM educational resources; and produce original media that highlights STEM innovation, history, and community problem-solving. The organization also seeks to identify and support "Hidden Einsteins"—individuals whose talents, curiosity, and creativity may otherwise go unnoticed—and connect them with opportunities to learn, invent, collaborate, and contribute.
Ultimately, Hawkins STEM aims to help create a more scientifically literate, technologically capable, and civically engaged society. By linking STEM to communities and communities to STEM, the organization seeks to cultivate informed citizens, inspire future innovators, strengthen local networks of learning, and demonstrate that STEM can serve as a unifying force that brings people together across generations, backgrounds, and perspectives.
